The Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) has authorized Kozloduy NPP – New Builds Plc to begin activities related to the selection of a site for the future Unit 8 at the power plant. This decision marks the beginning of the permitting and licensing process for the project, but it is not a building permit.
On February 18, 2025, the company submitted a package of documents to the NRA requesting a permit to determine the location of a nuclear power unit (Unit 8). After a regulatory review, the nuclear regulator gave the green light for the first phase: an official study and selection of a specific site.
What this means in practice is that the company can carry out assessments and analyses to determine whether a site is suitable and meets safety and technical suitability requirements.
The next step, once the company has demonstrated with the necessary materials that the selected site is suitable, is for the NRA to issue an order approving the site from a safety perspective. Only then can the process move on to the next regulatory stages of the Unit 8 project.
