The first of eight new metro trains manufactured by the Czech Skoda Group arrived in Sofia, marking a step forward in the modernization of the capital’s urban transport system. The acquisition was presented by Mayor Vasil Terziev, with the aim of gradually replacing the oldest Russian trains serving lines 1, 2, and 4 of the underground railway.

Although the first metro train is already available, it is unclear whether Sofians will be able to travel on it immediately. All eight metro trains must be delivered and undergo mandatory testing by the middle of next year.

Mayor Terziev emphasized that the new trains are lighter, more energy efficient, and meet the latest safety and comfort standards. They have a fully accessible interior, which facilitates passenger movement along the entire length of the train, as well as modern air conditioning.

We would like to remind you that the contract for these eight trains was signed with Skoda in July 2023 for a value of BGN 134 million excluding VAT, and their delivery is part of a broader plan to upgrade the network. SO also has a contract with Siemens Mobility for another 8 metro trains for line 3.

The modernization of the rolling stock is directly linked to the ambitious expansion of the metro. Ten new metro stations are currently under construction in Sofia.

Against this backdrop, Metropolitan launched a new public tender in October for the delivery of eight more metro trains for lines 1, 2, and 4. Interestingly, the estimated value of the tender is BGN 280 million excluding VAT, with an option for the delivery of eight additional trains included in the amount. This basically means that the long-term plan is to completely replace and increase capacity with a total of 16 new trains on these three lines alone. As of today, the deadline for submitting bids for this new procedure has been extended, with the opening expected on November 24, 2025.

Mayor Terziev emphasized that improving urban transport is a comprehensive policy that is already yielding results, citing the opening of new tram lines, the restoration of tram 5, and the optimization of suburban routes. He expressed hope for good cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
