Turkey has discovered a gas field in the Black Sea with reserves of 75 billion cubic meters, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today, quoted by BTA.

The field, estimated to be worth around $30 billion, was discovered in the Göktepe-3 well, near Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone.

This field will meet the natural gas needs of Turkish households for 3.5 years,” Erdogan said during an event in Istanbul.

He specified that work on the well began on March 27 and was completed on Friday.

Turkey’s daily gas production from the leading Sakarya field in the Black Sea reached about 9.5 million cubic meters. The country is strengthening its energy ambitions both domestically and abroad, Reuters notes.

Turkey meets over 90 percent of its energy needs through imports. Ankara is seeking to reduce its import costs and increase security of supply by developing domestic resources and expanding international partnerships in oil and gas exploration.
