There is hardly a more appropriate place in Sofia to open the photo exhibition “Moldova 35. Our Independence Unites Us” than the Lovers’ Bridge. Anyone who views the selected photographs will feel how Moldova becomes closer, more personal and somehow even more beloved.
And this is only natural – the exhibition presents to the Bulgarian public the historical, cultural and tourist heritage of the Republic of Moldova as yet another symbol of friendship and close relations with our country.
The exhibition was officially opened by His Excellency Mr. Emil Jacotă, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Moldova to the Republic of Bulgaria.
In his welcoming speech, the Ambassador recalled the path taken by the Republic of Moldova during its 35 years of independence, during which democratic institutions have been strengthened and the path towards European integration has become increasingly visible.
The history of Moldova has its roots in the distant past – a heritage reflected in the Cucuteni culture, traditional costumes, folk songs and dances, the work of Ștefan cel Mare, Orthodox spirituality and the rich cultural traditions preserved over the centuries, noted the Ambassador of Moldova to Bulgaria, H.E. Emil Jacotă.
The Ambassador expressed hope that through the exhibition more people will discover Moldova’s traditions, hospitality, wines, cultural and tourist attractions.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria Ms. Ivanka Tasheva also took part in the opening ceremony. On behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Velislava Petrova-Chamova, she delivered a congratulatory message on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova and praised the idea behind the exhibition.

The event, whose organization was supported by the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Moldova in Plovdiv, Eng. Dr. Vesselin Chipev, was attended by numerous representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Sofia.

Among the official guests at its opening were Dr. Eng. Meglena Plugtshieva-Alexandrova, Secretary for Foreign Policy to the President of the Republic of Bulgaria; Member of Parliament Galin Durev – Chairman of the Bulgaria-Moldova Friendship Group and Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs and Oversight of European Funds in the 52nd National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria; as well as Ivan Pavlov, Director of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria.
Among the heads of diplomatic missions in attendance were: H. Martin McDowell – Chargé d’Affaires of the United States to Bulgaria; H.E. Mr. Abdulrahman Ahmed Sultan Essa Al Jaber, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates; H.E. Mr. Chikahisa Sumi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan.
The event was also attended by H.E. Ms. Andrea Ikić-Böhm, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Austria; H.E. Mr. Flemming Stender, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Denmark; H.E. Ms. Brândușa Ioana Predescu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania; H.E. Mr. Milan Ravić, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Serbia; H.E. Mr. Elmar Eldar oglu Mammadov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan; H.E. Ms. Aleksandra Micic, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bosnia and Herzegovina; H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo, Ambassador of Cambodia; and H.E. Representatives of the diplomatic missions of Albania, Israel, Italy, the Sovereign Order of Malta, Poland, Ukraine and Finland were also present, along with representatives of Bulgarian state institutions, cultural and museum circles, members of the Moldovan community in Bulgaria and representatives of the Bulgarian public.
Highlights of the Visual Journey Through the Republic of Moldova
The exhibition focuses on landmarks in Chisinau, the medieval fortresses of Soroca and Tighina, historic monasteries, the Old Orhei cultural and natural complex (Orheiul Vechi), picturesque natural landscapes, renowned wine galleries, traditional Moldovan cuisine, folk costumes and authentic crafts.
A special place is given to the ia – the traditional blouse with “altiță” embroidery, inscribed through the joint nomination of the Republic of Moldova and Romania on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The photographs in the exhibition “Moldova 35. Our Independence Unites Us” were provided with the assistance of the National Tourism Office of the Republic of Moldova and photographers Roman Friptuleac and Oleg Pelin, whose contribution is of great importance to the realization of the project.
The photo exhibition “Moldova 35. Our Independence Unites Us” can be visited at the Lovers’ Bridge in Sofia until September 8, 2026.
In recent months, the Bulgarian public has also had the opportunity to take a closer look at some treasures of Moldovan cultural heritage through special exhibitions in Plovdiv and Sofia. They featured traditional blouses made by the women of the “Sezatoarea Basarabiei” community, based on patterns and motifs preserved in the collections of the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History in Chisinau.
Those of you who have not yet seen this cultural treasure – the traditional ia – take the opportunity to do so – the exhibition in Sofia continues until August 31, 2026.
