The American company Westinghouse Electric has placed its first official order with a Bulgarian supplier in connection with the project to build new nuclear units at the Kozloduy NPP site. The order is for MTG-Dolphin AD, a shipbuilding company based in Varna.
The company will develop a Nuclear Quality Assurance Program (NQA-1) – a mandatory element for every supplier on nuclear projects, ensuring compliance with international safety standards; implementation of a nuclear safety culture – including management, training, and control systems; preparation of engineering documentation for the production of a mock-up of the AP1000 CA structural module; potential construction of the mock-up itself, following approval of the documentation.
This first step aims to confirm the Bulgarian company’s ability to meet the high standards required for work on next-generation nuclear projects. The AP1000 modules are part of Westinghouse’s leading technology, which is planned to be used in the construction of two new units at the Kozloduy NPP.
We are proud to support Westinghouse on its path to building Bulgaria’s nuclear energy future,“ said Svetlin Stoyanov, CEO of MTG-Dolphin AD.
The order is part of the US company’s commitment to develop a local supply chain. The company has already signed memoranda of understanding with 30 Bulgarian companies that have the potential to participate not only in the Kozloduy project but also in other international nuclear projects using AP1000 technology.
Local suppliers such as MTG-Dolphin will contribute to a real economic impact at the local level and create thousands of jobs during the construction and operation of the nuclear units,“ said Dan Lipman, president of Westinghouse’s Energy Systems business unit.
The project for new nuclear power plants in Bulgaria using AP1000 technology is seen as a strategic part of the future energy security of the country and the region.
