The innovative Bulgarian project for the production of energy storage batteries BG EXERON X-BESS has been granted strategic status under the European Commission’s Net Zero Emission Technology Development Regulation (NZIA). This makes Bulgaria one of six European countries with a project listed in the EC’s public register of strategic projects and puts the country on the world map of energy storage technology manufacturers.
The news was announced after a meeting between Minister of Economy and Industry Peter Dilov and Alexander Rangelov, CEO of International Power Supply (IPS) AD, the company that developed the patented technology.
This is a step forward for Bulgaria and our participation in the European and global energy transformation industry,” Minister Dilov emphasized.
The importance of strategic status
The granting of strategic status underscores the importance of BG EXERON X-BESS for the European energy transformation. The project is fully in line with the objectives of the Regulation on secure and sustainable supply of zero-emission technologies, which aims to expand production capacities and their supply chains within the EU.
The project is an important step towards Bulgaria’s inclusion among European manufacturers of green technologies and the implementation of high-tech solutions to combat climate change,” commented Petar Dilov.
BG EXERON X-BESS is expected to support efforts to increase security of supply and contribute to the development of the energy storage industry in Bulgaria and Europe.
BG EXERON X-BESS: Innovation from Bulgaria
BG EXERON X-BESS is a complete battery energy storage system (BESS) developed entirely using patented technology by the Bulgarian company International Power Supply AD (IPS). The company is a long-standing player in the field of energy solutions, with experience in the manufacture of power conversion, management, and storage systems installed in 59 countries around the world.
The batteries will be manufactured in the high-tech Hemus Industrial Park, located in the Kremikovtsi district of Sofia. The plant is expected to open this fall, which will accelerate the implementation of the project.
In addition to its strategic importance for the energy sector, the BG EXERON X-BESS project will also bring significant social and economic benefits to Bulgaria. At least 65 new jobs are expected to be created by the end of 2025, many of them with high added value: 25% will be in research and development and engineering, and 60% will be technical specialists. The figures underscore the focus on innovation and highly skilled labor.
